TRUMAN AND KOREA: LIBERATION AND WAR

August 15th is the National Liberation Day of Korea. It commemorates Victory over Japan Day, which liberated Korea from Japanese rule. President Harry S. Truman played an important role in Korea’s liberation from Japan in 1945, as well as in the Korean War between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The August webinar gives an opportunity for people to learn more about President Truman, a Missouri native, and his ties with Korean Liberation and the Korean War. The webinar will cover the following topics:

1. Truman, Korean Liberation and the 1945 Potsdam Conference

2. The beginning of the Korean War in 1950 (Role of the UN, Congress, Dean Acheson)

3. The firing of MacArthur

4.  African Americans in the Korean War and/or medical treatments

5. The new Truman Museum and what Korean War exhibits there will be

Speaker: Mark Adams

He is the Education Director at the Truman Library and Museum.  Mark has been at the Truman Library and Museum since 1997 and oversees the education program at the Library. Prior to his work at the Truman Library, Mark worked at the Kansas Museum of History for six years. Mark is a former high school history teacher and received degrees in history and secondary education from the University of Liverpool and University of Wolverhampton in England.

Moderator: Kathianne Crane

She is a retired Missouri appellate court judge, as well as a GKF board of directors nominee. In 1967-68, after graduating from Washington University and before starting St Louis University Law School, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Daegu, South Korea, teaching English to first year students at Daegu Girls Middle School. As a result of this introduction to Korea and its people, she has maintained a lifelong interest in Korean culture, art, film, food, literature, history, and politics.
