2021 DANO-SPRING FESTIVAL

DanO 2021 will be celebrated in partnership with the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM) as we have done each year since the first DanO festival. This year, however, it will be presented entirely online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual festival will have four programs:

1. Opening Ceremony
2. Jumeoni making demonstration
3. Talk by Lee Talbot
4. Cross cultural panel discussion

VIRTUAL OPENING CEREMONY
MONDAY, JUNE 14 | 7:00 - 8:00 PM

The DanO Opening Ceremony will feature a welcome statement by Chairperson Dr. Seungkwon You, an original cartoon animation telling the story of DanO by David Stevenson, and a celebratory dance performance by Board Member Janet Park. The Opening Ceremony will be available live and available for later viewing on the Gateway Korea Foundation’s YouTube channel.

VIRTUAL DEMONSTRATION: BOK JUMEONI WITH YOUNGMIN LEE
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16 | 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Artist Youngmin Lee of San Francisco will host a LIVE virtual demonstration on how to make jumeoni, which are embroidered drawstring pouches Korean people carried as traditional Korean clothes do not have pockets. Ms. Lee’s demonstration will be available for FREE through Zoom, hosted by the St. Louis Art Museum from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 16. VIRTUAL LECTURE: TEXTILES AND WOMEN’S CULTURE IN JOSEON DYNASTY KOREA WITH LEE TALBOT
FRIDAY, JUNE 18 | 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Expert in East Asian textile history, curator of The Textile Museum, and lecturer with George Washington University’s Art History Program Dr. Lee Talbot will present on “Textiles and Women’s Culture in Joseon Dynasty Korea.” This lecture will present a dazzling selection of garments, accessories, and furnishings from Korean and American museum collections to explore the role of textiles in upper-status Korean women’s lives during the Joseon Dynasty, especially as creative, expressive outlets for women in an otherwise highly patriarchal society. Dr. Talbot’s lecture will be available for FREE through the St. Louis Art Museum’s YouTube Channel from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, June 18. VIRTUAL CROSS CULTURAL PANEL DISCUSSION
SATURDAY, JUNE 19 | 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Youngmin Lee, Lee Talbot, and Edna Patterson-Petty, a textile artist specializing in African American textile arts, will host a cross cultural panel discussion via Zoom discussing African American, Korean, and East Asian textile arts and exploring the uniqueness and similarities among women as textiles artists. The panel will be moderated by Amanda Thompson Rundell, the Director of Learning & Engagement from the St. Louis Art Museum. The panel discussion will be held on Zoom.

YOUNGMIN LEE

Youngmin Lee is a Korean-born artist who holds a Master’s degree in fashion design and a Bachelor’s degree in clothing and textiles. She has presented numerous workshops, classes, and demonstrations on Korean arts and crafts around the Bay Area. She recently demonstrated her Bojagi and Maedub in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco as part of the Asia Alive Program, and she has also participated in the Oakland Museum’s Lunar New Year celebration with her Bojagi and Maedub artworks..

LEE TALBOT

Lee Talbot is Curator at The George Washington University Museum and Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., where he specializes in East Asian textile history. Before joining the museum staff, he spent two and a half years as curator at the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. He currently is preparing the exhibition Korean Fashion: From Royal Court to Runway, on view at The Textile Museum from August - December, 2022.

EDNA PATTERSON-PETTY

A lifelong resident of East St. Louis, IL and a graduate of SIU-Edwardsville, Edna Patterson-Petty is a textile artist specializing in African American textile arts. Some of her art quilts have been published in numerous books and catalogues, and on a few occasions her art has also been on the cover of books. Her art quilts have also been exhibited in galleries nationally and internationally.
